Full Marks For Obama's Speech

President Barack Obama deserves a lot of credit for his speech to the Muslim world yesterday from Cairo, Egypt. He sent the right message to the world that the United States was embarking in a new, more open and conciliatory road, than the one pursued by former President George W. Bush. Bush was pretty much universally disliked outside of the United States.
Obama's approach is to be applauded as America is seen to be a world leader and should use that leadership to do more of the right thing, rather than be self-serving. Hopefully his words can be followed up with actions to show Muslims that we are not the enemy, and that diversity of thought is to be encouraged and accepted.
The u-turn in American foreign policy is quite astounding on this point. The United States is being given optimistic if cautious approval for this change by most people, which is heartening. However, if he is doing well overseas, President Obama seems lost at home. His call for never-ending spending to get over the recession is totally contrary to good and established practice. Could you imagine the disastrous result if each family in the nation also adopted this approach.
What this country needs is a leader who can do both things well. Manage the economy and policy at home while becoming a better world citizen at the same time.
